All our lives we’re told by everybody and everyone to be ourselves. “Just be yourself,” they’d say. And the whole World is still preaching it. Be… …yourself.
That’s a funny thing about playing music. The moment you’re brave enough to play songs in front of an audience the whole World starts telling you to be someone else. And it’s not just audiences either. Teachers, Coaches, Fans, Friends, Family, and Bandmates too. They will preach and pray for the opposite of “Be Yourself”. Play someone else’s music. Not because they’re mean, not because they don’t want to support you. Only because they want to hear a song they know and maybe even sing along too.
Music is the natural unifier of people everywhere in our World. When a song you know well is being played most people like to sing and perhaps dance along. We’re all fortunate to live in a time with a vast music history full of artists and possibilities.
I need everybody to hear what I wrote. So this is my bar and it’s unachievable. Write songs as good as all the songs that’ve already won. Easy, right? I’ll keep trying anyway.
